Publication Design

From research to site visits and documentation, we painstakingly put together the content for books from scratch. Putting a book together requires writing, art direction for photography and sometimes getting your hands dirty in old ateliers in the by lanes of Jaipur.

Our love for books reflects in the labour of love that these projects become, sometimes lasting up to a year.

PROJECT IN FOCUS

Luxmi Tea

This century old company approached me to do a corporate brochure for them on their centenary, a few years ago. Being one of my first book projects, I wanted to really explore and push my artistic capability, and also transform the notion of a boring traditional corporate brochure to something that would give the user joy to look at.

My starting point was a conversation with the manager of one of their estates called Matelli in West Bengal – which had the most beautiful geographic structure with rivers streaming through every inch of the map, and where rare and beautiful animals and birds abound. The brief I received for this from the estate manager was:

The rolling hills, endless stretches of green tea plantations, separated by meandering silvery mountain streams, thick, wildlife rich forests, quiet clusters of meadows with a blue outline of magnificent Himalayan ranges on the horizon endless blue sky – this is Dooars for you.

The book followed the theme of the map, and I highlighted the peacock as the hero element, it being the national bird of India. Some pages from the brochure below: (the photographs were selected and blue green hues highlighted to reflect the peacocks jewel tones).

PROJECT IN FOCUS

Obeetee

This book done for Obeetee Rugs, India’s largest exporter of carpets, involved a site visit to Mirzapur in U.P. to understand how the carpets are woven, and the unique methods that were employed to fabricate the range featured. It also involved studying the fashion of Tarun Tahiliani, the designer, and converting his ethos of layering and ornamentation into digital design.

Putting together a book involves a deep dive into understanding the ethos, production methods and vision of the brand.
